Gas prices set to rise: As reported by The Independent, wholesale gas prices are the highest they've been all year. This may mean energy providers will increase the amount they charge customers in the near future.
Three out of the six major energy firms have withdrawn their cheapest tariffs from the market in recent weeks. You may make savings by changing energy providers – an average household can save around £260 by switching from their current standard tariff to a dual fuel deal.
However, reducing energy use - whilst maintaining comfort levels - can be achieved by simply insulating lofts and cavity walls. With grants available, at least in the short term, if not for ever, the savings made could offset any contribution householders may need to make, in under a year.

Centrica has announced higher energy bills are on the way this Winter, due to slowly rising gas prices that are expected to increase still further this autumn.
Nick Luff, Centrica's finance director, gave the following warning "wholesale gas and power prices are looking quite a lot higher for this coming winter."
Offset this rise in gas prices by insulating your homes now, before winter sets in and you find your bills rising. If you leave it any longer to book, you may find that installers are too busy to get round to doing your property before it starts getting colder.

Energy: Householders must pay more and use less to meet targets.
If Britain is to meet climate change targets, householders must face a £300 a year rise in their gas and electricity bills along with significant cuts in usage, according to the government.
Energy Secretary Chris Huhne outlined plans to transform Britain's energy system and to cut emissions by 80% within the next 40 years.
32 separate measures including the use of Smart Meters, a major expansion of renewable energy sources, a new generation of nuclear power stations and up to 4,000 wind turbines were announced, though it was admitted, these policies could increase the price of electricity and gas by one third and one fifth respectively, taking the average family's energy bill up to £1,400, up by £300. Built in to the costs is the assumption that manufacturers will continue to make products more energy efficient.
Householders are urged to offset the rise in energy prices with the use of solar panels and other renewable energy generators, in order to offset this cost by reducing what they take from the grid.
The impact of the policies is bound to be felt hardest by the poorer consumers as only the better off can afford to install solar panels and other micro-generators, though the subsidies to fund these measures are paid by all energy consumers, according to the watchdog, 'Consumer Focus'. However, energy companies will be forced to refurbish homes with better insulation in Britain's deprived areas.
What does this mean to you?
What this means is, is that if your home insulation is not up to scratch, you'll be consuming more energy than you really need to. The increased cost of energy will mean that you're not only paying more, but you're subsidising those who have taken steps to reduce their energy requirements by installing micro-generators and who have made their homes less energy greedy in other ways, i.e. by installing insulation.
The message is, get your home insulated as soon as possible. Grants for loft and cavity wall insulation are available to all home-owners and private tenants, who can apply for it from this website. Those in social/council housing should check with their landlords.
